How do we manage emotions?
The Bible encourages believers to address their emotions in a way that is consistent with God’s teachings and offers advice on how to manage emotions. Here’s how:
1. Proverbs 29:11 (MEV): 11 *A fool utters all his mind, but a wise man keeps it in until afterwards.
This verse reminds us to consider our actions and words before acting, and it promotes self-control and restraint in emotional expression.
2. Ephesians 4:26–27 (MEV): 26 *Be angry but do not sin. Do not let the sun go down on your anger. 27 *Do not give place to the devil.
While acknowledging that anger is a normal feeling, this text warns against letting it drive you to sin. It suggests settling disputes and preventing resentment from growing.
3. Philippians 4:6–8 (MEV): 6 *Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and supplication with gratitude, make your requests known to God. 7 *And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will protect your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
8 *Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honest, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue, and if there is any praise, think on these things.
This passage encourages believers to bring their worries and anxieties to God in prayer, seeking His peace and trusting in what God provides. The scriptures also give us wisdom about how to think.
