Today I spoke at my grandmother in law’s funeral and I used John 16:16 (NIV) which says:
“In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.”
Today was a celebration of life. We celebrated the fact that she was in heaven. There was no reason to mourn forever because we would see her again. Just like what we see in this very same passage of scripture. She left this earth but, one day we will see her again.
In this passage, Jesus is speaking to His disciples, preparing them for His impending death, resurrection, and ascension. He tells them that He will soon leave (referring to His crucifixion), but after a little while, they will see Him again (referring to His resurrection). It also has a broader eschatological meaning, as it can point toward His second coming, when believers will see Him again in glory.
