The Purpose of the Law

As followers of Christ, we are not “under the law” in the sense that we are not required to obey the Old Testament law to earn salvation or be justified before God. Salvation comes by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, not by works of the law (Ephesians 2:8-9; Galatians 2:16).

However, this does not mean we ignore God’s moral standards. Instead, through the Holy Spirit, God writes His law on our hearts (Jeremiah 31:33; Hebrews 10:16). This means that, as we follow Jesus, our lives naturally align with His commands, which fulfill the essence of the law: love for God and love for others (Romans 13:8-10; Matthew 22:37-40).

So, while we are not under the law as a system of salvation, we still live out its moral principles because they reflect God’s character and will. Our obedience is not a way to earn God’s favor but a response to His grace.

In short: We are not bound by the law, but by the Spirit, we fulfill its purpose through love and obedience to Christ.
