18 Then Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All AUTHORITY has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe ALL THINGS I HAVE COMMANDED YOU. And remember, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen. (Matthew 28:18–20, MEV)
Jesus said; “I give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven.”
What does this mean and how does it apply?
I will give you the KEYS of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” (Matthew 16:19, MEV)
The keys to the Kingdom of Heaven reflect the authority Jesus delegated to his disciples.
Jesus delegates this authority today, according to Mark 16:17; “THOSE WHO BELIEVE” in MEV version of the Bible.
Let’s observe an example of unbelief. Unbelief when described in the scripture, refers to those who failed to know and believe who Jesus really was.
20 Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief. For truly I say to you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. And nothing will be impossible for you. 21 But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.” (Matthew 17:20–21, MEV)
Before Jesus addressed fasting and prayer, he addressed their unbelief.
Prayer and fasting was not a limitation, it was an expression of faith and evidence of a true relationship with the one who gave us authority over demons.
Fasting was understood as a type of mourning and self denial. Not a limitation to casting demons.
Those who truly know, and believe in the authority of Christ, could cast out these demons.
In a Christian sense, Jesus taught self-denial when He said, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me” (Luke 9:23). This means choosing God’s will over personal desires. This is the context of fasting and prayer in Matthew 17:21.
