Is It Time for an African Pope? Why should I care, I’m not Catholic? Is this a historic moment for the Catholic Church?

The passing of Pope Francis has set the stage for a groundbreaking decision—could the next pope come from Africa? With the rapid growth of Christianity in the Global South, many are calling for a leader who reflects the church’s future.

Why It Matters:

There are approximately 1.4 billion Catholics in the world today. African cardinals like Peter Turkson (Ghana) and Fridolin Ambongo (DR Congo) bring both spiritual depth and cultural insight to the table. Their leadership could offer a bridge between the traditional and the emerging church, emphasizing compassion, truth, and justice.

Even if you could not find common ground with the Catholic Church, we must believe that God will make things work for his purpose.

It’s up to Protestant believers to bridge the gap between the Catholic Church and the Protestant Church, to work towards a common goal of getting believers to heaven and understanding salvation by faith alone.

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not of yourselves. It is the gift of God, not of works, so that no one should boast. (Ephesians 2:8–9, MEV)
