The Author Wasn’t There — But God Was

The traditional view is that Moses wrote Genesis. Moses wasn’t there at creation — but God was. Genesis 1 isn’t based on human observation, but on revelation. In other words:

The Creator Himself told Moses what happened.

Just like a historian can’t witness ancient events but relies on trustworthy sources, Moses relied on the ultimate Source — God, who was there in the beginning.

God Reveals Truth Supernaturally

The Bible often speaks of God revealing things to prophets:

“No prophecy ever came by the will of man, but holy men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.” — 2 Peter 1:21

Genesis was likely written by Moses under divine inspiration — meaning God guided him to record truthfully and accurately what had happened, even before Moses existed.

Other Possibilities: Oral or Written Records

Some scholars also believe Moses may have used ancient oral traditions or written records passed down from people like Adam, Noah, or Abraham. But even if so, the final form of Genesis was guided by God’s Spirit, ensuring it was accurate.

Faith and Science Both Require Trust in a Source

In science, we trust instruments and experiments. In history, we trust documents and eyewitnesses. In faith, we trust the God who was there, and who communicated truth through human writers.

The author of Genesis didn’t witness creation — but the One who created everything did, and He revealed it to mankind so we could know our origin, purpose, and relationship to Him.
