The law of Christ means loving God with all your heart and loving other people like you love yourself. In Mark 12:32–33, a man talking to Jesus agreed and said that loving God and others is more important than all the sacrifices people used to offer. Jesus and the man both understood that these two commands summarize everything in the Old Testament.
The New Testament teaches that Jesus fulfilled the Old Testament Law (Romans 10:4; Galatians 3:23–25; Ephesians 2:15). Now, instead of trying to follow over 613 laws, Christians are called to simply love God and love others. If we do that with all our hearts, we’re doing what God wants.
Jesus set us free from the burden of following all those laws in our own strength. Now, He calls us to live a life of love. First John 4:7–8 says that anyone who truly loves is born of God and knows Him—because God is love. And 1 John 5:3 reminds us that loving God means obeying Him, and His commands aren’t hard when they come from love.
Some people think that because we’re not under the Old Law, we can do whatever we want. But Paul says in Romans 6:15, “No way!” As Christians, we should avoid sin because we love God and people—not just to follow rules. When we remember how much Jesus gave for us, our hearts should respond with love, thankfulness, and a desire to live like Him. Our goal isn’t to check boxes, but to live in love—because we love Jesus.
