The Lord’s prayer versus religious ritual

Some people pray religiously—going through the motions—rather than sincerely, from a heart that truly seeks God. Their words sound polished, but their hearts feel distant, as if they’re reciting a script instead of having a conversation with their Father.

Sometimes this could be the case with the Lord‘s prayer found in Luke 11:1-4 however if we truly believe those words, and we act on those words with faith obedience, we have not failed.

Many have argued that the Lord‘s prayer was an Old Testament prayer, but I believe that is false. The things Jesus spoke, He spoke with the intent to lay a foundation for us to follow. Anything can become religious ritual when not used with faith and obedience. It’s simply the intent of your heart.

1 He was praying in a certain place, and when He ceased, one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.”

He said to them, “When you pray, say:

Our Father, who is in heaven,

hallowed be Your name.

Your kingdom come;

Your will be done

on earth, as it is in heaven.

Give us each day our daily bread.

And forgive us our sins,

for we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.”  (Luke 11:1–4, MEV)
