What is Theology?, and why you should know.

By Elving Ellis Lead Editor

Our readers may have noticed that we often discuss theology. It’s important to clarify what theology means to the body of Christ.

Theology, often misunderstood, leaves a bad taste for many. Simply put, theology is the study of God, with the Bible being its most fundamental expression.

Theology is sometimes experienced through the lens of philosophy, known as philosophical theology. This branch uses philosophical methods to interpret theological concepts, which can be problematic. It often employs deductive reasoning, starting from general ideas to reach specific conclusions, contrasting with the inductive method.

Inductive reasoning builds general conclusions from specific observations. Biblical theology relies on this method, using scripture for guidance through meticulous observation. Deductive reasoning, on the other hand, starts with a hypothesis and seeks evidence to support it. Exegetical theology, a part of biblical theology, interprets texts to discern their meaning.

Doctrine, another aspect of theology, simply means teaching. Contrary to the belief of some that we need less doctrine, the Bible’s frequent reference to doctrine with over 50 examples, suggests otherwise. The New Testament Greek term for doctrine, ‘didachē,’ refers to the act of teaching. Today’s church could benefit from more solid, truth-based doctrine.

The importance of the inductive method cannot be overstated, as it is essential for deriving sound theological principles and doctrine.

The Five Solas

By Elving Ellis Lead Editor

The five solas are a set Latin phrases that encapsulate the biblical gospel. Sola, is Latin for “alone” or “only”. The five solas are still relevant today and are regarded as fundamental tenets concerning the doctrine of salvation:

  • Sola Scriptura: Scripture alone: 1 Peter 1:23 (MEV): 23 *for you have been born again, not from perishable seed, but imperishable, through the word of God which lives and abides forever.
  • Solus Christus: Christ alone: Acts 4:12 (MEV): 12 *There is no salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
  • Sola Fide: Faith alone: Romans 3:28 (MEV): 28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the works of the law.
  • Sola Gratia: Grace alone: Ephesians 2:8–9 (MEV): 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not of yourselves. It is the gift of God, 9 not of works, so that no one should boast.
  • Soli Deo Gloria: To the glory of God alone: John 5:44 (MEV): 44 *How can you believe, who receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?
