The righteousness of God

2 Corinthians 5:21 declares one of the greatest truths in the Christian faith: “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” Jesus Christ, who lived a perfect and sinless life, willingly took upon Himself the penalty and judgment that belonged to us. On the cross, He stood in our place, bearing our sin so that we could receive what we could never earn by our own efforts—right standing with God. This was not an exchange based on human merit, but on God’s grace and love.

When a person places their faith in Christ, God no longer sees them through the lens of their failures, sins, and shortcomings. Instead, He sees them clothed in the righteousness of His Son. This righteousness is not a gradual achievement or a reward for good behavior; it is a gift received through faith. Because of Christ’s finished work, believers are accepted, forgiven, and reconciled to God. Their identity is no longer defined by their past but by their union with Jesus Christ.

This truth brings tremendous freedom and confidence to the Christian life. We do not strive to become righteous in order to gain God’s acceptance; we live from the righteousness that has already been given to us in Christ. As we grow in faith, our actions begin to reflect the new nature God has provided. The believer’s confidence rests not in personal performance but in the perfect obedience and sacrifice of Jesus. We are made the righteousness of God in Him, and that reality becomes the foundation for a life of gratitude, worship, and dependence upon the Lord.
