Light is one of Scripture’s most powerful symbols – standing for truth, righteousness, guidance, and salvation. Jesus declared, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me shall not walk in the darkness, but shall have the light of life” (John 8:12). If you belong to Him, you are a child of the light, because you walk with the One who is Light itself. And that light cannot be defeated: “The light shines in darkness, but the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1:5).
As children of the day, we are called to live differently. Paul writes, “You are all the sons of light and the sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness… let us be alert and sober” (1 Thessalonians 5:5-6). To be sober is to think clearly instead of stumbling in poor judgment; to be alert is to see the enemy before he attacks. This is not a passive faith – it is a watchful, wide-awake walk in the light.
That is why we put on the armor of God. Paul urges us to “take up the whole armor of God that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having done all, to stand” (Ephesians 6:13) – the breastplate of faith and love, the helmet of the hope of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Those who wear the armor of light deflect the enemy’s attacks by the strength only God supplies. We were never meant to dwell in darkness; in Christ we have both the light and the covering to stand firm in it.
