Not that long ago thousands of Christians gathered at Dam Square in Amsterdam in a public show of support for Israel. Despite rainy weather, participants came together to pray, express solidarity, and publicly demonstrate their support. The gathering brought together Christians who wanted to make their views known during a period of continued conflict and international debate surrounding Israel.
The event also drew attention because of opposition from Dutch government officials. Organizers and participants continued with the gathering despite the political controversy surrounding the event. For many Christians present, the demonstration was connected to their understanding of the Bible and their concern for Israel and the Jewish people.
The Amsterdam gathering highlights how Christians in Europe continue to participate in public discussions about Israel, faith, and international affairs. It also demonstrates how religious communities can use peaceful public gatherings to express their convictions and call attention to issues they believe are important.
