Lee Brainerd and the Biblical Defense of Israel

Lee Brainerd has become known among Bible prophecy teachers for emphasizing the importance of Israel in understanding Scripture and biblical prophecy. His approach is rooted in a literal and consistent reading of the biblical text, particularly the promises God made to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, David, and the nation of Israel. Brainerd argues that these promises should not simply be transferred to the church. In discussions about prophecy, he has emphasized that Israel remains central to God’s prophetic program and that Christians should pay attention to what Scripture says about Israel and Jerusalem. He also stresses that biblical prophecy must be approached with context, consistency, and discernment.

One important part of Brainerd’s defense of Israel is his opposition to the idea that the church has completely replaced Israel in God’s purposes. He argues that God’s promises concerning Israel have not been canceled and that Scripture points toward a future fulfillment involving the Jewish people and the land of Israel. This perspective is associated with premillennial and dispensational interpretations of prophecy, although Christians hold differing views on these subjects. Brainerd’s teaching therefore connects Israel’s continuing significance with passages concerning the tribulation, the return of Christ, and the future kingdom. In his discussions of prophecy, he has argued that the prophetic story ultimately centers heavily on Israel and that Christians should understand Israel’s place within the larger story of God’s redemption.

Defending Israel biblically, however, does not mean declaring that everything the modern nation of Israel does is automatically right. The biblical pattern is more nuanced. God can preserve His promises while still holding individuals and nations accountable for their actions. Brainerd’s emphasis is that Christians should not erase Israel from the biblical story simply because Israel’s history includes rebellion, judgment, and suffering. Instead, Christians should recognize God’s faithfulness to His promises while keeping Jesus Christ at the center of redemption. For Brainerd, the ultimate hope is not merely the preservation of a nation but the fulfillment of God’s prophetic purposes and the return of Jesus Christ. His teaching challenges Christians to study what Scripture actually says about Israel rather than allowing political events or theological traditions alone to determine their understanding of God’s Word.
