We Died to Sin — Romans 6:6–7

“What does it mean to die to sin?”, Paul explains it especially clearly in Romans 6.

In simple terms

To die to sin means that sin is no longer your master.

It does not mean that you can never be tempted or that you will never make a mistake. It means that through your union with Christ, you have been given a new relationship to sin.

Paul says:

“How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?” — Romans 6:2 (MEV)

And:

“Knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, so that the body of sin might be destroyed, that we should no longer be slaves to sin.” — Romans 6:6 (MEV)

You don’t have to obey sin.
-You don’t have to surrender to temptation.
-Sin no longer has the authority it once had over you.
-You can yield yourself to God instead.

Paul actually connects this directly to our choices:

“Do not yield your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but yield yourselves to God…” — Romans 6:13 (MEV)

So the teaching could be summarized:

“Dying to sin doesn’t mean sin disappeared. It means sin lost its position as your master.”
